Take 3 Sets of the Alphabet Post 1 by Fri October 5th

Our next assignment is alphabet photography.  Your challenge is to begin seeing lines and shapes in the world around you.

We are going to the square in downtown Commerce today to begin taking images.

Bring your cameras and a tripod if you wish!

Let's meet back up in the classroom in Wathena at 3 pm.

I will demonstrate how to size the images, create a seperate canvas, layer and crop your images to create a single final image.  This technique will be used for the next 2 or 3 assignments so you really need to come back to class after shooting a few letter images.

By Friday, the 5th of October, you will need to have 3 sets of images taken and 1 set showing the letters of the alphabet up on your blog for class discussion.

Assignment: 3 Critique of Kiera Faber

Everyone did a great job today!  What a great critique of your first printed images.  I'm really proud of everyone for the effort put forth in printing your images and speaking today.

Your assignment for next week is to write a critique on your blog of the images by Kiera Faber that are on exhibit in the Art Gallery on campus.  Please write about the image you thought was the strongest and the image you think was the weakest in the show.  Use the information provided in class on how to critique a photo to write your blog.  The more information you use from the lecture the better.

Everyone needs to have either the self  portrait or the portrait taken by a classmate as the profile image on the blog for class.  Since this class is introduction to digital media I think it is important that you have an image from class as your profile picture for your class blog.  The image should tell the internet viewer something about you.

Don't forget to bring your camera to class on Friday!

We will be starting a new project and we will be taking your first images during class on Friday, September 28th.  After roll is taken and the assignment explained, we will all be going to the plaza in downtown Commerce.  So, if you have a car, I'm hoping you can help give rides to those who don't have a car.

Assignment 3: Portraits of Classmates

Due: 2 printed images on Friday 21 September at 1 pm.

Where: The critique will be held in the Wathena Gallery on the 2nd Floor.

What: Pick the best portrait images of the person you photographed. Print at least 2(two) 10x 15 images .  Two prints is the minimum, but you can print more. The cost is $2 per square foot paid with your Leo card.

Things to consider: There are lots of students from all the other photography and VisCom classes printing their assignments this week.

DON’T WAIT TILL FRIDAY TO MAKE THE PRINTS.

I will not be able to help anyone prior to class on Friday since I will be driving back from Dallas on a tight time schedule.  Just want to give you a heads up.

Anyone having less than 2 prints will be considered to have an incomplete assignment and will lose 10 points off of the total grade. Anyone arriving late to critique will lose 10 points from their total grade. Anyone having 2 prints or more and arriving on time will have the option of resubmitting additional work for a higher grade. Students arriving late or submitting incomplete work will not have the option of resubmitting their work.

BE ON TIME WITH PRINTS IN HAND!

The final images will be graded on the elements of lighting, use of compositional tools and how well you captured your classmate's personality. Good luck!

Assignment #2: Portrait of Others

Photographer:  David Lachapelle
The class will be dividing into groups of two to three people.  We are going to take a few minutes in class for you to have a chance to 'interview' one another and exchange contact information.  Get to know the members of your group and think about how you would like to create a portrait of them.

Spend some time thinking about and creating an interesting shot that tells us something about your subject.

The final images will be graded on the elements of lighting, use of compositional tools and how well you captured your classmate's personality.  Good luck!

Due:   Friday, September 14, 2012

Post your favorite 5 images on your blog before class on September 14th.

Assignment #1: Self Portrait

There is a rich tradition of self-portraiture in photography and one of the first subjects that every student studying photography should photograph is themselves. In this assignment students are to make five (5) very distinct images of him or herself. Each image should express the concept or idea of “I”.

Hint: For images to be successful, shoot a lot of images. Pick a location that works for what is needed to convey the idea and then work it to death. No train tracks allowed or ducks
and only natural light!  No Flash!

The work will be evaluated on concept and composition. We will not be printing these images.  This  assignment is inteded for use as the first media representation of your work.

Due:   Friday, September 7, 2012

Post your favorite 5 images on your blog before class on September 7th.

What:  Bring the files of all your self-portrait images on your hard drive to class. The more images you have the better. We will be use these files for our first lab exercise in LightRoom  and PhotoShop.

Remember, your metadata will need to show the images were taken between August 31 and September 7, 2012.

I will be more than happy to come in as early as you need on Friday if you need help preparing your images for the web.
