A little bit worried...

I am just a little bit worried since I will not be talking to the class before the final.

After grading the images this weekend from Aaron Siskand, I want to make sure that if you choose to turn in some Aaron Siskand images for the final you understand the assignment.

Some people seem to be confusing minimalism with abstract expressionism.  The Aaron Siskand images should be in the realm of abstract expressionism.

min·i·mal·ism n.
1. A school of painting and sculpture that emphasizes extreme simplification of form, as by the use of basic shapes and monochromatic palettes of primary colors, objectivity, and anonymity of style. Also called minimal art, reductivism, rejective art.
2. Use of the fewest and barest essentials or elements, as in the arts, literature, or design.

abstract expressionism n.
A school of painting that flourished after World War II until the early 1960s, characterized by the view that art is nonrepresentational and chiefly improvisational.

Self Assessment due on November 30th

Self Assessment Essay due on Friday, November 30th at the end of class.

Please write a short 4 paragraph self-assessment based on what you learned/did not learn in Photography 111 Introduction to Digital Media class.

Paragraph 1 - Values
What value did this Photo 111 Introduction to Digital Media offer to you this semester?
Some examples of what you might want to consider in your value statement are listed below.
  • How did you perceive yourself as a photographer at the beginning of class and how do you perceive yourself now?
  • What do you like/dislike about your experience in this class?
  • What were your strengths/weaknesses in photography at the beginning of class compared to the end of the semester?
  • Is photography/digital media important to you? Do you think it will be in the future?
  • How did you feel about this course before you started it? Did you think you would enjoy it? Did you think it would be hard, or easy? How do you feel about the course now you are almost finished?
  • What do you like about this particular class?
  • Did any particular photography technique prove useful? If so, how?
Paragraph 2 - Interest:
Was the class content interesting? What did you find interesting?  What did you find boring?

Paragraph 3 - Skills:
What skills did you learn?  Are there any skills you wish you had learned but you were not offered the information.

Some examples of skills learned this semester might include:
-Composition
-Printing
-Presentation
-How to take a picture
-How to use a camera
- Information on photographers
-How to critique a photograph
-How to mat.

Paragraph 4 - Grade for the semester
Finally, please give yourself a grade for the semester you feel that you have earned based on attendance, projects, participation in critiques, participation on the class blog and your final presentation.  Explain why you feel you deserve the grade you have given yourself.

Please print this out and hand it in on Friday, November 30th or email it to me at gsisco@yahoo.com

You won't receive a grade on this exercise.  This is a class writing participation grade.  It is a simple do it and you get a 100, don't do it and it  is non-participation.  I will be using your feedback as I try to plan for the next PHO 111 class.  Thanks so much for your input.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Have a great Thanksgiving and come back safely.

The final for this class is Friday, Nov 30th at 1:00.  Please come with 10 final prints matted and ready for formal critique.  The final prints must be from the class assignments.  The images can be all of one assignment or a mixture of all of the assignments.  The mats must by 16x20 except for the panoramics.  If you choose to show your panoramic(s), go ahead and cut the mat to fit your image.  The images need to be printed as a10x15 (except for the panoramic images).

Everyone did such a great job in critique today.  I am so proud of each and every one of you.

Don't forget to have your blogs up-to-date by the final.

See you then.
